Holidays and Homeopathy

It's holiday time and many people struggle just to get through it. Instead of being a time to enjoy family and friends, it turns into a time of sadness, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and over stressed. Hopefully, you won’t need any remedies but if you do, here's a list to choose from.

Sadness/Grief

Depression is a major concern during this time of year. Too many people feel so sad and lonely during the holidays whether it’s due to loss of a loved one due to death, divorce or break up, or, if you can’t be with those you love. Try Ignatia. It is a major grief remedy and a key indication is sighing. This is the remedy for someone who can’t overcome their loss. For a deep depression with thoughts of suicide, use Aurum Metallicum and get professional help.

Anger/Resentment

• Staphysagria - You may not want to see certain people because of insults, slights, etc. Staphysagria can help you to "deal with it".
• Natrum Mur should be considered also if the person is holding a grudge. Consolation aggravates. People needing Natrum Mur tend to eat a lot of salt.

Anxiety

• Lycopodium - just wants everything to go off without a hitch if they are hosting an event. There is self-doubt and low self-esteem. Lycopodium people like sweets.
• Arsenicum - wants everything to be just perfect. There is restlessness and anxiety; ailment is worse from midnight to 2 am.
• Argentum Nit - there will be restlessness with pacing. This remedy is also good for stage fright.
• Gelsemium - nervous anticipation but person just sits and thinks about it. Another remedy for stage fright.
• Aconite - Fearful that things won't go as planned. The key word here is "fear".
• Coffea Cruda - Cannot settle down at bedtime because they had a stimulant earlier.

Overindulgence

• Nux Vomica - for over-eating, over-drinking, over-doing. It is an "excess" remedy. It's also known as the hangover remedy. If there are digestive problems, stomach ache, constipation, irritability and chilliness then consider Nux Vomica.
• Pulsatilla - Would be for overindulgence of rich, creamy foods. Pulsatilla wants to be coddled and needs fresh air.
• Carbo Vegetabilis - for gas, distension.
• Arsenicum Alb - Food poisoning.

Children

• If they become irritable with crying, screaming and don't know what they want, give them Chamomilla.
• Coffea Cruda is for children who are all wound up and unable to sleep.

Don’t forget these same remedies apply to your PETS. With people tramping through the house, plenty of food to get to, even having to travel, pets can get stressed out and also depressed if they have lost someone they loved.

Viscum Album

Viscum Alb is made from Mistletoe of the European variety. The tincture is made from the fresh leaves and berries.

Some of the symptoms associated with this remedy are:

• Respiratory - FEELING OF SUFFOCATION WHEN LYING ON LEFT SIDE. Spasmodic cough. ASTHMA, if connected with gout or rheumatism.
• Heart - Weight and oppression of heart; as if a hand were squeezing it; ticking sensation about heart.
• Hearing - RHEUMATIC DEAFNESS.
• Extremeties - Rheumatism with TEARING PAINS. Sciatica with TEARING, shooting pains. General tremor in all muscles.
• WORSE: winter, cold, stormy weather; in bed; movement; lying on left side.

Homeopathic Stories

I've been using remedies since I was about 15. That's 17 years. But it has only been for the past 10 years that I've really increased my knowledge because of the needs of my three boys.I have so many stories to relate that I don't know where to start. But I try to pick some of the most striking from over the years.

My oldest son contracted infantile botulism when he was 4 months old. He spent 3 weeks on a ventilator and 5 weeks total in the hospital. When he was released, he was on two laxatives because the toxin had paralyzed his bowel, and he still couldn't go to the bathroom. I took him off the laxatives as soon as possible because I didn't want him dependent on them. But his constipation became extremely severe. Not even suppositories and enemas would always work. I decided to try a remedy, but didn't really think it would help (I was inexperienced). I gave Calc. Carb. 30c. He had a spontaneous bowel movement that day and was not constipated again for some weeks.

Two years ago I had a serious case of bronchitis. I had severe shortness of breath and felt extremely cold. I thought I would have to go to the hospital. But I took one dose of Calc. Carb. 200c, and within minutes I could breath and felt much more positive. By the end of the week, the bronchitis was so much better that I was functioning almost normally.

My 3 year old son began to come down with chest congestion one evening, it came on very rapidly with lots of rattling mucous and wheezing. I gave him one dose of Sulphar 30c and within one hour there was no more wheezing. He woke the next morning with no sickness whatever.

My oldest son has ADHD and tends to get very hysterical and emotional. It can become nearly impossible to deal with him. He also has trouble sleeping and tends to jerk and twitch in his sleep. On one occasion when it had gotten very bad, I gave him a dose of Ignatia 30c. He very quickly composed himself and for the rest of the week was a different child, calm and positive.

My kids have never suffered with bee stings. Every time they get stung, I give them a dose of Apis 30c, and the pain is gone within 5 minutes.

I took Phos. 30c for severe arthritic hip and low back pain. The pain disappeared, and my chiropracter noted that my adjustment was very easily the next time I went in. I told him about the remedy, and he asked me to bring him some information about homeopathy.
